Southwest Truck Driving Schools FAQ

I just graduated from high school and am looking for a career. How do I know I am qualified for truck driving school?
While you do not need college or technical training, or even have previous driving experience before you attend truck driving school, you must be at least 21 years old. The Department of Transportation requires this of all drivers who will be driving across state lines.

What does CDL stand for?
CDL stands for Commercial Driver’s License. For over twenty years, operators of commercial vehicles have been required to obtain this license before operating a commercial vehicle. There are three types of CDLs: Class A, Class B, and Class C. The class you will apply for depends on the type of commercial truck you will be driving.

Am I required to pass a physical in order to obtain a CDL?

The Department of Transportation requires that you complete and pass a physical examination in order to obtain a CDL. Certain physical impairments may disqualify you from obtaining your CDL. If you have any specific questions, visit www.fmcsa.dot.gov to learn more information.

Am I required to pass a drug test before I obtain a CDL?

After you enroll in a truck driving school, you will be required to pass a drug test. This is a Department of Transportation regulation and is required of all truck drivers. Once you obtain your CDL and begin your career as a truck driver, you will continue to receive random drug tests.

Once I’ve passed a physical and a drug test, and finished my training course, am I qualified to obtain a CDL?

Once you have passed a physical, a drug test, and finished your course, you will be required to pass the CDL exam, which consists of written and driving portions. The exam will vary from state to state throughout the southwest.

I don’t currently have a valid driver’s license. Can I still attend truck driving school?
No. You must have a current driver’s license from the state in which you live to qualify for truck driving school.

After I graduate, what am I qualified for?

There are many trucking companies throughout the southwest United States that you will be qualified to work for. These companies will provide a truck and typically pay you per mile. You may choose to lease a truck and work as an independent contractor or start your own business.

If I want to lease an 18-wheeler, what models should I look at?
Look at a variety of makes and models to see which truck fits your needs. In the United States, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Volvo, and Mack are the most common models.

How much does an 18-wheeler cost?
You will be purchasing a cab and a trailer. A new trailer costs between $30,000 and $60,000. A new cab costs between $80,000 and $120,000. However, you can lease with a trucking company at an affordable price, so you are not required to pay for the entire amount of the truck up-front.
